Marni Nixon was an American soprano singer and actress. She rose to prominence as a playback singer in films like West Side Story and The King and I. Nixon was born Margaret Nixon McEathron on February 22, 1930 in Altadena, California. Her parents were Charles and Margaret. Nixon started out as a child actress and sang choruses. She studied singing and opera as a child.
CAREER
Nixon made her film debut as a voice actor in the 1948 film, Joan of Arc. She followed up with voice work for Big City (1948), The Secret Garden (1949), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). She was featured in the 1954 musical comedy, The Girl in Pink Tights. Nixon worked with several actresses including Deborah Kerr and Sophia Loren. She dubbed the singing voice of Natalie Wood in West Side Story (1961), and Audre Hepburn in My Fair Lady (1964). She was referred to as “The Ghostess with the Mostest” by Time magazine due to her many uncredited roles.
As an actress, Nixon made her film debut in 1965 musical drama film, The Sound of Music. Other film include I Think I Do (1997) and Mulan (1998). Her stage credit includes James Joyce’s The Dead, Follies, and 70, Girls, 70. Nixon was honored with the Singer Symposium’s Distinguished Artist Award in 2008.
