ORIGIN
The Weeknd is a Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, songwriter, and music producer. He’s known for such hits as “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy” and “I Feel It Coming”. The Weeknd was born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada. His Ethiopian parents are Makkone and Samra Tesfaye. He’s fluent in both Amharic and English. The Weeknd attended West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. He dropped out at age 17 to focus on music.

CAREER
The Weeknd released three mixtapes in 2011: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. He also gained early exposure through music uploads on YouTube. The Weeknd’s sophomore album, Beauty Behind the Madness, was released in August 2015 atop the Billboard 200 charts. It was led by the singles “Can’t Feel My Face”, “The Hills” and “Often”. He won a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The single “Earned It” won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. It was the lead single from the soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

The Weeknd’s third album, Starboy, was released in November 2016. It featured the duo Daft Punk on the singles “Starboy” and “I Feel It Coming”. The album was certified Platinum in Canada and Gold in the United States. In 2016, The Weeknd was featured on Kanye West‘s The Life of Pablo and Beyonce‘s Lemonade. He collaborated with rapper Future on the single “Comin Out Stron” from the album Hndrxx (2017).
