ORIGIN
J. Cole is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and music producer. He’s recorded multiple studio albums including Cole World: The Sideline Story, Born Sinner, and 4 Your Eyez Only. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on January 28, 1985 at an U.S. Army base in Frankfurt, Germany. His mother, Kay, is a retired postal worker, and his father a former U.S. Army solder. He has an older brother named Zach. Cole grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended Terry Sanford High School followed by St. John’s University in New York City. He graduated magna cum laude in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.

CAREER
Cole began rapping and writing lyrics at the age of 12. He was inspired by recording artists like Tupac Shakur, Nas and Eminem. His early productions were done under the moniker “Therapist”. Cole founded Dreamville Records in 2007. His debut mixtape, The Come Up, was released in May 2007. He eventually caught the attention of record producer Jay Z who signed him to his Roc Nation imprint in 2009. Cole followed up with the mixtapes The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010). He was featured on Jay Z’s album The Blueprint 3 (2009), and on Wale’s album Attention Deficit (2009).

Cole’s debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, was released in September 2011 atop the Billboard 200. The album was certified Platinum and featured guest artists Trey Songz, Drake and Missy Elliott. Cole’s second album, Born Sinner (2013), was met with similar success. It was led by the singles “Power Trip”, “Crooked Smile” and “Forbidden Fruit”. His third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, was released in December 2014. It sold over 1 million copies and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. It won the 2015 BET Hip Hop Award for Album of the Year and the Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Album.

Cole’s fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only, was released on December 9, 2016. He previously released a promotional 40-minute documentary titled ‘Eyez’ on December 2, 2016. 4 Your Eyez Only marks his first release with Interscope Records. The album features the singles “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, “Immortal” and “Deja Vu”.

J. Cole is 6ft 2in tall and is of African-American and European ethnicity. His net worth stands at $25 million. He made $35.5 million in 2018 and was ranked #5 on the Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings list. Cole married longtime girlfriend “Melissa Heholt” in 2015. The two began dating back in 2005. Melissa is a St. John’s University graduate and executive director of the Dreamville Foundation.
