HMC Farms has issued a voluntary recall for nonorganic whole peaches, plums and/or nectarines because of potential listeria monocytogenes contamination, the state Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch announced Monday.

The fruits were sold nationwide, including Hawaii, under multiple brand names such as HMC Farms and Signature Farms.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, according to a DOH news release. Infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and/or diarrhea.

To date, 11 illnesses have been reported nationally, though the DOH said there have been no illnesses in Hawaii attributed to the recalled fruit products.

Consumers concerned about a potential illness should contact a physician.

The impacted products are all HMC Farms peaches, plums and/or nectarines sold between May 1 to Nov. 15, 2022 and between May 1 to Nov. 15, 2023. The products were sold as individual pieces of fruit or in consumer packaging. They are no longer available for sale in retail stores; however, consumers may have frozen the recalled fruit for future use.

The PLU labels of the recalled fruit are as follows:

• Yellow peaches, 4044 and 4038.

• White peaches, 4401.

• Yellow nectarines, 4036 and 4378.

• White nectarines, 3035.

• Red plums, 4042.

• Black plums, 4040.

No other HMC Farms products are being recalled.

Consumers who have the fresh or frozen recalled fruit should discard it, the DOH said. For more information, contact HMC Farms by calling (844) 483-3867 from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m.
