BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Amid the ongoing battle over the Meridian Library District, demonstrators gathered at the Ada County Courthouse, holding signs and vocalizing their opposition to getting rid of the district.
"I believe that the public library does much more good than it does bad. They are a semimetal part of our community and a necessary information bringer for every citizen, even if they do not live in Meridian," said Izzy Burgess, the organizer for the Save the Library demonstration.
Earlier this month the group, Concerned Citizens of Meridian, filed a petition to dissolve the district, accusing it and the trustee board of allowing children access to “obscene” materials “targeted at sexualizing minors.”
But those supporting the library said they don't agree.
"It seems a little like a cop-out for parents to say that they can be led to see things that they shouldn't see. But also, like the internet is a thing, and there's no restrictions on the internet, and so for it to be an entire libraries fault for pushing this seems a little absurdist," said demonstrator Ryan Marsh.
As the petition goes through the Ada County Board of Commissioners for dissolution, many in the group are worried about what this will mean if the library is eliminated.
"It is a real move towards a world that we don't want. A world that is anti-education and anti-information, and that's not what anyone wants. We want more informed citizens, and we want more involved citizens," Burgess said.
